Female Fertility: Folate and a gene called MTHFR

So, you’re thinking about having kids and it’s got you thinking about your fertility and what you need to take into consideration before you start trying?

One of the fundamental pieces of nutrient advice you’ll often be told prior to conception is the importance of taking folate or folic acid (also known as a B vitamin, B9). While there are several nutrients to take into consideration as part getting your body ready for conception and pregnancy, this article will hone in on the importance of folate specifically, where it’s found and how it’s used in the body, as well as the role that our genes play in the conversion of folate to its active (i.e. usable) form, methylfolate (also referred to as L-Methylfolate, 5-MTHF).
